MYTHBUSTER: THE GREAT MISCONCEPTION

MYTH BUSTER #1: THE GREAT MISCONCEPTION:
“THEOLOGY ARE ONLY FOR THE SPIRITUAL ELITES”

Many people have the misconception about theology. We often assumed theology as something complex, something which only can be comprehended by the ‘spiritual elites’ who graduated in Bible seminaries with a list of credentials and academic certificates.

Has anyone tried to break down the word “Theology” before?

If you break down the word, it would be “Theo” which means ‘God’ and “Logos” which means ‘science or study’. Theology is not something complex. It is what we talk or understand about God. It can be over a cup of coffee when we share about how God has been faithful in helping us in our work. It can also happen in a movie while watching probably 2012 and asking your neighbor “Is God going to destroy the whole earth this way?”

Theology is not just for the spiritual elites. It is for everyone. It can happen anywhere. So the next thing you think about ‘theology’, think again.

THE MISCONCEPTION BUSTED!!!

What do you think?

  2. Right theology should be based on the Word of God. It should not be based on mere personal and individualistic views and opinion. That's probably how cults are started...

  3. I guess for people who consider themselves as "self- made", God does not exist in their world, so to them God is kept at arm's length and reserved for spiritual people.Could they be in denial, hurt along their journey of life, or just do not find a need for God because their world is OK for now? Knowing the meaning of theology is helpful to debunk the myth and open the way for us to just talk about God without theologizing it... starting a conversation that will point people to God...

  4. Anyone that reads and interpret the Scripture is a theologian, whether they are born-again or not. Therefore, anyone that reads and interpret Scripture are forming their own theology. Its just that the word Theology usually points to academic study in Theology, which is complex. Just like anyone who can change a light bulb is essentially an engineer ... but studying engineering is very tough ....:) So it depends what you meant by theology.
